Pregnant mothers deserve caring, personalized attention, tailored to their individual needs.   Rio Grande Midwifery offers leisurely prenatal and postpartum visits, which address the emotional and social aspects of pregnancy, birth and parenting as well as tend to the physical and medical needs of mother and baby. During your pregnancy, your midwife will be available to you 24 hours a day should any urgent issues or concerns arise in between visits. When your birth arrives, you will receive one-on-one support throughout labor, delivery and the immediate postpartum period.

Birth is a natural process and happens most normally when a mother is at home, surrounded by the support people of her choice. In the familiar safety of her own home, a mother is able to relax and labor according to her body's natural rhythms. Privacy, a calm environment, and freedom of movement have all been shown to drastically reduce birth complications. Many studies have shown that planned, midwife-attended homebirth is as safe or safer than hospital birth for healthy women with normal pregnancies. Rather than a medical event that must be suffered in order to receive a baby, a homebirth is a joyful celebration of life and the family.

Midwives attend only healthy, low-risk mothers and babies. Being healthy and low-risk means that a woman does not have any medical problems (high blood pressure, heart disease, etc.) or special conditions, such as twins or a breech baby, which may complicate birth.

Although most low-risk pregnant women in our care deliver their babies safely at home, a timely transfer to the hospital can be easily arranged should conditions arise during labor that require a doctor's expertise. Should a transfer of care become necessary during labor, one of the Rio Grande Midwifery midwives will remain with the mother and continue to provide loving support and guidance throughout labor and birth.

Many health insurance companies will pay for the services of licensed midwives and homebirth. After your birth, we will gladly submit a claim for your care to your insurance company so that you may be reimbursed for the cost of our services.
